A kind of global treasure hunt is adding a new dimension to Southwest Florida tourism — and another use for Global Positioning System technology.

Geocaching — pronounced geo-cash-ing — began just more than six years ago. Players get coordinates from a Web site or other means, and use Global Positioning System, or GPS, devices to lead them to caches.

GPS-based geocaching has grown into a worldwide sport with more than 320,000 hidden caches, according to geocaching.com, a site considered authoritative by many engaged in the high-tech scavenger hunt.

gets long, but is really good!Collapse )

If you were looking to have the ideal geocaching kit, like a little pack, or bag, what would you put inside it? Beyond your GPSr. :)

Hunter orange is THE color for the season...well, it is if you're a dog in the woods geocaching! I snapped this shot this morning at Blueberry Fields Forever in Nova Scotia.
X-posted to Various GC communities :)

Wheee! Went caching this morning, got two that I didn't get the other day when dragging the kids around, and took my mom do to a quick one by her house. Picked up a geocoin and a tracking bug!! Loving it!!

Saw the most beautiful waterfalls. Course, all falls are nice, but this one is secluded and has a nice picnic spot, where one could sit on the ground and snuggle with their hunny.

Welcome to geocache_canada!

I created this community on November 2, 2006 because while the other Livejournal geocaching communities are wonderful, they are not overflowing with Canadian content. I hope we can change that.

So please, come on in, brag about the caches you've found, moan about the ones that you've logged as DNF. Plot out the best ways to make those pesky micros!!
